SUMMARY:

Entitled “The Deep, Part Two,” it was published by DC Comics for May 2009.  Aboard their orbiting Bat-shuttle, the Outsiders bicker amongst themselves.  Detecting a massive underground tremor in Germany, Geo-Force leads Halo, Black Lightning, Katana, and Owlman to investigate the cave-in.  Halo visits a young cave-in survivor in a German hospital for an eyewitness account.

Across the globe, the villainous King Makers’ civilian accomplices are covertly summoned to Iceland.  In exchange for their mystically-extended lives, these acolytes will control drilling robotic Thrashers to search for further remnants of a mysterious meteor that conveys immortality.    Stunned by an attacking Thrasher, the exhausted Outsiders can’t prevent Katana’s underground abduction, as she is in the path of a meteor fragment.

REVIEW:

Supported by the art squad (including a top-caliber cover image), writer Peter J. Tomasi delivers a pretty good cliffhanger.  In particular, Tomasi adds appreciated spark to the chemistry between long-time teammates Black Lightning, Katana, and Geo-Force, as these characters convey their distinctive personalities so well.  Halo’s hospital scene comforting an orphaned child also nails the perfect touch of poignancy.  For fans of DC’s original Outsiders squad, this well-played issue is certainly worth checking out.
